SINGLE REVIEW: SCARLETT BY THE PAINTING.
The Painting leave their mark with their single ‘Scarlett’.
The Painting’s newest single ‘Scarlett’ is a lively release that sets the stage for their upcoming debut album, Before the Rain, which is set to be released in October. It is a punchy and polished track that showcases a band confident in their direction.
Formed in 2024 by frontman Ciaran Murray, The Painting are a rock band from Scotland who are currently carving out their space in the Glasgow independent scene. The band succeeds Arcade State, Murray’s former band where drummer Jordan Murray, guitarist Cameron Roxburgh and Bassist Lewis Taylor were also key members. The Painting is completed with Lewis Taylor on bass, Marta Leslie on keys and Jonny Emerson on guitar.
‘Scarlett’ sees the six musicians enhance their sound in the second single from their soon-to-be released debut album. The song is an upbeat indie tune that gets bolder as it goes on, with emotive delivery from all members.
The track kicks off with a muffled guitar coming into focus, with a steady drum beat coming in soon after along with Murray’s powerful vocals to accompany. He has great delivery In the first chorus we hear the instrumental drop back slightly as Murray’s voice is brought front and centre. There is already a lot of energy building, but the second chorus is when it all comes together and it feels grand.
There is a sense of momentum as the track pushes forward. To continue this is a fierce guitar solo underlined with harsh drums. The instrumentation drops back again for the bridge which has beautiful backing vocals. This is a breath before the final push where the final chorus and outro of the song goes all out before coming to a ringing finish.
‘Scarlett’ is a standout track for its energy. It is a superbly structured song that is cohesive and keeps the listener engaged. This makes for an impressive second single ahead of Before the Rain that will leave any listener wanting to hear more.
If you are a fan of the likes of The 1975, Sam Fender or War On Drugs, then this band could be for you too. The Painting is a band to keep an eye out for. The Scottish independent scene is looking bright and The Painting is here to make sure it stays that way.
