LIVE REVIEW: AMY MACDONALD - GLASGOW OVO HYDRO 11.12.2025

A night with one of Scotland’s most successful and beloved singer-songwriters in the country’s biggest arena — truly, what more could you ask for? From the moment the doors opened, there was a palpable buzz in the Hydro, a sense that the audience were ready for a proper Scottish celebration.

The evening kicked off in style with the ever-endearing Cammy Barnes, whose warm personality and trademark cheeky smile had the crowd onside instantly. Blending catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and even the unmistakable sound of bagpipes, Cammy delivered the perfect opening set. As he and his incredibly tight band took to the stage, they were met with a wave of cheers and energy that set the tone for the night ahead.

Cammy worked through an impressive selection of songs, including fan favourites Beauty in the Streets, Pipes of Home, Bonnie — his touching tribute to his young daughter — and his latest single Whiskey Roll. Each track landed perfectly, lifting the atmosphere higher and higher. His set was full of personality, charm, and genuine connection, the kind of performance that reminds you why Scottish artists have such a strong reputation for live shows. The crowd sang, danced, and clapped along from start to finish, clearly appreciating every moment.

As the stage was reset, the arena suddenly came alive with the unmistakable opening of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers — a Scottish anthem that never fails to unite a crowd. The familiar chorus fuelled the excitement as everyone prepared for Amy MacDonald’s arrival. When the lights dimmed and her band began to walk out, the roar of anticipation was immense.

Amy opened her set with Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For?, her new single and the title track of both her latest album and her UK tour. It’s an uplifting, confident song with a catchy hook, and the audience wasted no time in joining in. Throughout the evening, she performed a rich mix of material, showcasing her evolution as an artist while celebrating the songs that made her a household name. Tracks such as Dream On, The Hudson, Statues, Mr Rock & Roll, and Pride — inspired by her emotional performance of Flower of Scotland at Hampden — were all met with huge enthusiasm.

Of course, one of the biggest moments of the night came when she launched into her iconic breakthrough hit This Is the Life. The reaction was electric. The entire arena rose to their feet, singing at full volume, clearly transported back to the memories and moments the song has soundtracked over the years. It was a truly special moment that highlighted just how deeply her music resonates with people.

Beyond the music itself, one of the standout features of the night was Amy’s effortless rapport with the crowd. She spoke warmly and honestly between songs, sharing stories, showing gratitude, and creating a sense of intimacy even within a massive arena. Her band was exceptional, delivering a powerful, polished sound that elevated every track. Amy repeatedly praised them — as well as her “amazing stage” — and the audience agreed wholeheartedly. The production was striking, vibrant, and fitting for a Scottish music icon who knows exactly how to put on a show.

From start to finish, the Hydro felt like one big Scottish party. The fans never stopped singing, the energy never dipped, and Amy MacDonald proved once again why she remains such an important figure in Scottish music. Her voice was strong, her stage presence commanding, and her connection to the audience undeniable.

If you have the chance to see Amy MacDonald live, take it — you will not be disappointed. She delivers a performance that feels both deeply personal and brilliantly celebratory, leaving you with a smile on your face and a tune in your head long after the final note fades.
